"Doors" are programs written to run from within your BBS.

BBS Doors were orignally written to provide more "functions" for a BBS. There are chat doors, games, time banks, dating doors, BBS Lists and the types of doors are endless. Many of the "doors" can be run in a stand alone mode for local use, but were designed to allow "callers" to a BBS to access them.

The first doors written in 1979-1980 were written to allow a single caller into the door to do something. In the case of a game, the player could take their turn and would have to wait until the next day or after all other players in the game had completed thier turns before he/she could take another turn. Many of these older doors written prior to ~1988 were "single node" doors and only allowed one player at a time to use them.

Many doors written after ~1988 were written to allow multiple players into the game at once (also known as multi-node). This allowed a more interactive game. Some were chat doors allowing real time online chat, others were games where players could play against a "live" player.

Since BBSing started before the Internet was such a big hit, this was online entertainment.
